Abstract:
The qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) is an emerging research approach, which is based on the set theory and systems theoretical perspective. Contrasting to the regression approach that investigates the net effect of each individual variable, QCA examines holistic configurations of multiple variables as causal recipes of the desired outcomes. Part I of this research seminar will focus on the theoretical foundation of this emerging research approach. Furthermore, its matching methodological tools, such as crisp-set QCA (csQCA) and fuzzy-set QCA (fsQCA).
Part II of this seminar will focus on an application of the QCA approach in solving complex problems. Example studies adopting the QCA approach (especially in the information systems field) will be discussed to better understand the research contexts and goals, such as theory validation, extension, or development, that best fit this holistic approach. I will also introduce a recent study that applies fsQCA to a complex organizational problem of generating comparative actions in today’s digitized business environment, in which the configurational approach is used to extend existing theories. In line with this, the detailed steps of a fsQCA application will be introduced.
