On December 30, 2021, [Mingli Lecture Hall 2021 Issue 76], we were honored to invite Associate Professor Zhu Ning from the Department of Management and Economics of Tianjin University to bring a report entitled "Two-stage Uncertain Optimization Technology and Its Application". This report was held online in the form of a Tencent conference, which attracted more than 100 teachers and students from colleges and universities across the country to participate. Among them, more than 20 teachers and students, including associate professor Zhang Yuli and Zhu Bin, associate professor of the School of Management and Economics, attended the lecture and communicated with Mr. Zhu Ning after the report. The host is Associate Professor Gao Gao, Department of Management Science and Logistics, School of Management and Economics.
In many application scenarios, decision makers are faced with two-stage decision-making problems, namely the first-stage decision (Here-and-now decision) and the second-stage decision (Wait-and-see decision). In addition to this, policymakers are also challenged by uncertainty. Starting from some applications, Mr. Zhu Ning introduced the commonly used techniques of two-stage uncertainty optimization, such as Two-stage stochastic program and Two-stage robust optimization. For example, the location selection of detectors, the rebalancing of shared bicycles, etc., the modeling ideas and methods are discussed, and the corresponding solution algorithms are designed.

Zhu Ning is an associate professor at the Department of Management and Economics of Tianjin University, and a National Excellent Youth. The main research direction is traffic system operation management and optimization. Use technical tools such as mixed integer optimization, stochastic optimization, robust optimization, and stochastic process to research problems such as location selection, vehicle routing optimization, and resource allocation in transportation and logistics systems. Specific research problems include: optimal location selection of traffic detectors, optimization and modeling of public transportation systems, route optimization of UAVs, location selection and rebalancing of public bicycle systems, and route optimization in disaster rescue. He has published more than 30 papers, including many papers as the first author/corresponding author in IJOC, TS, TR-Part B/C/E, EJOR, Journal of Scheduling, Systems Engineering Theory and Practice, and Journal of Systems Engineering. Presided over 4 projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China and 2 projects of the Ministry of Education.
