Philip Shapira is a professor at the Georgia Institute of Public Policy and a professor at the Innovation Research Center at the University of Manchester Business School. Professor Shapira's research interests include science and technology policy, economic and regional development, innovation management and policy, industrial competitiveness, technology evolution and assessment, innovation measurement and policy assessment. Professor Shapira's current projects include the Nanotechnology Research and Innovation System Assessment Research Project (part of the Arizona State University Social Nanotechnology Center) and the organization's impact project on highly creative scientific research. Prof. Shapira has published more than 50 journal articles, published 30 books, and conducted numerous policy studies. Professor Shapira is also one of the founders of the Georgia Institute of Economic Development Innovation Forum, which brings together faculty, students, economic developers, and policy makers to discuss advanced concepts and practices in economic development and innovation policies.
Lecture Description:
By institutionalizing research centers and foreign partnerships, research universities are building new global knowledge nodes and human exchange networks. More than 400 international university research institutes (IURV) have been identified into the IUVV global development research project. This paper studies the emergence and institutionalization of IUVV, and conducts a macro analysis of the obtained network data and case studies to explore the impact and challenges of the development of IURV on knowledge generation, human capital, international development and university trajectory.
